5 Rescued from Collapsed Boat in Newport News

Five people have been rescued from a collapsed boat on the James River. That’s the news out of Newport News this week, where a group of five was rescued by the Newport News Fire Department. In a lucky case of being in the right place at the right time, the fire department was on site performing a training drill when they came upon a collapsing boat. Five people had been knocked into the water as their vessel took on water and turned over. Thankfully, rescuers were able to pull the victims from the water and provide live saving efforts on one person who was not breathing. All five people are expected to make full recoveries.

Questions Remain

It’s not immediately clear what caused this accident to occur in the first place. Boat maintenance is incredibly important, but is too often neglected or forgotten about altogether. There’s a chance that poor maintenance led to this incident, but until investigator finish their work, there’s no way to know for sure how this accident happened.

Taking On Water

If you find yourself on board a vessel that is taking on water, make sure you and everyone else on board is wearing a life jacket. Then, put in a may day call just in case. You can take additional steps like finding the leak and pumping out excess water, but you’ll want to have your bases covered in case you need to abandon ship. While it’s impossible to fully prepare for these kinds of accidents, knowing what to do in a worst case scenario can save your life.
