Norfolk Shipyard Facing OSHA Penalties

Two shipyards local to the Norfolk area are facing fines from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

The shipyards—Colonna’s and Austal USA—have been cited for multiple infractions. Colonna’s employees have allegedly been exposed to what OSHA claims were “life-threatening safety and health hazards;” Austal was cited for twelve safety and health violations. The two shipyards face a combined set of penalties totaling over $140,000.

It’s always a relief when dangerous employers are stopped from behaving recklessly and with no regard to the health and well-being of their employees. Sadly, the fact is that many shipyards continue to ignore basic safety rules when it comes to the workplace. Sometimes they’ll get caught—but sometimes they won’t, and they’ll continue to act negligently. In the event of an employee injury, an experienced personal injury or maritime injury lawyer can help recover damages and compensation related to medical bills and lost wages.
