Oyster Barge, Boat Collide in Newport News

Two people are missing after a collision between an oyster barge and a recreational boat in Newport News. The July 14, 2018 incident occurred around 7:45 in the morning. Witnesses say that the bow of the recreational boat popped up behind a tug boat that was pushing an oyster barge on the James River. Nearby boaters helped to rescue four of the six people on board the recreational boat. Rescuers stayed on site to look for the two missing boaters, but the search was called off after more than 24 hours of searching. The Coast Guard plans to stay vigilant over the following week for signs of the boaters, but family members believe at least one of the men does not know how to swim and was not wearing a life vest at the time of the incident.

The Importance of Life Jackets

Early reports indicate that only one of the four people rescued from this incident was wearing a life jacket. Officials say this is just the latest in what they note as a disturbing trend of not bothering with safety devices while on the water. While life jackets may not fit with the footloose and fancy free attitude many recreational boaters take on in the summer months, they are excellent at saving lives – particularly the lives of those who cannot swim.

The Search Continues

While the official search for the missing boaters has been called off, the Coast Guard will continue to be on the lookout for any signs of their location. We are keeping the families of the victims in our thoughts during this difficult time.
